Hoplite

Hoplite is a turn-based rouge-like strategy game. You play as a knight who moves his way though a hexagonal board defeating monsters and gaining upgrades to try and complete certain objectives/achievements.

Aside from moving a single hex the game features 3 abilities:

  • Bash = Push a unit or bomb away from you
  • Leap = Jump towards a hex
  • Throw = Range attack which sacrifices your weapon
Each of these abilities can be upgraded several different ways by reaching the 'Altar' on each level. Later more powerful abilities even require your to sacrifice your health to unlock them. The decision making as to what upgrades to get and how much life to give up offers a nice strategical depth especially if you are trying to complete certain achievements. Unfortunately achievements are locked until you purchase the full-version of the game (the only IAP this game requires). Even so, the free version offers you plenty of gameplay.

Each of the enemies are different and the tooltips are easy to understand. The game can be very punishing as 1 wrong move or failure to plan ahead could kill you, forcing you to start from level 1 again. Because of it's randomly generated maps, the game has plenty of re-playability and the rewards you get from completing achievements (some are quite hard) are a nice addition too.

If you like a challenge and you like to take your time to think about your moves in strategy type games then I'd highly recommend this game.

Rating:
0 - You'd have to pay me to play this game.
1 - Terrible game and a terrible waste of storage space. Would uninstall immediately.
2 - Bad game. Don't even bother trying.
3 - Boring. Likely forgotten about in your apps list.
4 - Wouldn't bother playing unless you specifically liked the company/theme/genre.
5 - Meh, take it or leave it.
6 - Worth a play but nothing to brag about.
7 - It's fun but it won't last you long.
8 - Great game but I can't justify forking out money for it unless I was into the genre.
9 - Good enough to pay money for. I enjoyed it greatly.
10 - Highly recommended, one of my all time favorites.

Man Vs. Rocks

Link to Play Store

This is a small and simple game where you control 1 man who can only move left or right to dodge falling rocks and survive until the end of the level.

There isn't much depth to the game and each level design is similar. All that changes is the frequency, size and directions of rocks falling.

I'd recommend this game if you are looking for a lightweight game which is designed to kill less than 30 seconds of time per match. It's free, but not very addictive at all and you'll probably quickly get bored of it.
